Tournament Sparring Competition
 
TOURNAMENT SPARRING

Tournament sparring, unlike free sparring, is actually a test to see which student can spar better. This is competition. Due to the competitive nature of this type of sparring, judges will watch the match and award points based on the delivery of technique in accordance with the rules of engagement.

Violation of these rules can, and will, result in warnings and possibly disqualification.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT

  1. Unless changed by the rules below, all rules regarding Free Sparring should be observed.
  2. Participants may not punch to the head.
  3. When a judge yells "BREAK", immediately stop fighting and return to your original starting positions.

AWARDING OF POINTS AND WARNINGS

At tournaments, two judges and a center judge will watch the participants spar. Two out of the three judges must agree that a participant scored a point or a warning. A tournament round ends when one participant reaches 5 points or 2 minutes expire. If time expires, the participant with the higher score wins.

If there is a tie, the match goes to sudden death. The first participant who scores a point wins the match.

Points are awarded for legal techniques to legal target areas as follows:

  1. Punch or kick to the body- 1 point
  2. Kick to the head- 2 points
  3. Jump kick to the body- 2 points
  4. Jump kick to the head- 3 points

Warnings and disqualifications are awarded as follows:

  1. Punch at the head or face- 1 warning
  2. Kick or punch at an illegal target area- 1 warning
  3. Punch to the head or face with contact- 2 warnings
  4. Kick or punch to an illegal target area with contact- 1 or 2 warnings
  5. Excessive contact or impact- 1 or 2 warnings
  6. Causing blood to come from a participant will result in disqualifications.
  7. Unsportsmanlike conduct will result in immediate disqualification.

Effects of warnings:

  1. If a participant receives 2 warnings, a point will be awarded to the other participant.
  2. If a participant receives 3 warnings, the participant is disqualified.
